Making Friends as a Senior Citizen: You are Never Too Old to Make New Friends
When you were a child, making friends at school was no problem. Once you graduated and entered the workforce, making friends at work was also done with ease. However now that you are retired, where do you go to make new friends? Research indicates that close relationships are very important for your physical, mental and emotional health. Your self-esteem and longevity are linked to close relationships. Here are some ways to make new friends well beyond your school-aged years.
- Avoid the notion that everyone your age has all the friends they could possible want or need. Nobody is going to come out and say they could use another friend. However, a lot of people do need more friends.
- Accept invitations to attend various events. Even if the event does not seem like something you are really interested in, getting out of the house increases your chances of making new friends. Often times, new friends are found in the most unlikely places.
- Turn to a local college as a place to find new friends. Many community colleges offer continuing education classes. Some are geared specifically towards seniors and often times these classes are free or very low-cost.
- Visit your
local senior center. From trips to bingo to classes and other activities, your local senior center is bound to have an activity that you are going to enjoy. Stop by and ask for a schedule.
- Consider a part-time job even though you are retired. Even if it’s a just a day or two a week, a part-time job will allow you to meet new people and provide you with a little extra spending money.
- Pursue activities that you have always wanted to try. Whether it is fishing, yoga or cooking, look for a class that interests you. Attend classes consistently so that you have time to meet new people and build relationships.
- Turn to social media. Facebook can be very helpful in allowing you to connect with old friends and even connect with friends of friends -- who may have many of the same interests as you. Social media is also a great way to stay connected with the grandkids.
- Get together with friends and neighbors. You can cook dinner for your friends and neighbors or grill out. If you do not like to cook, consider organizing a potluck meal. Chances are many of your friends and neighbors will want to get together. All you need to do is ask!
- Are you an animal lover? Get a dog! Conversations with other dog walkers are almost guaranteed. Even individuals without pets are likely to stop you to talk. If your living arrangements do not allow for a pet, consider volunteering at a local shelter.
- Practice your religion. Church can be a great place to meet individuals with common interests and beliefs. Churches also have many different gatherings that you can attend.
You can meet friends at any age. Sometimes you just need to think outside of the box!
